{ SOMMjournal.com }  97 PlantCorc for the Planet One development that helps put Vinventions at the forefront of cutting-edge wine-closure technology is Nomacorc's trademarked PlantCorc range of Green Line corcs, an entirely new category of closures made from renewable sugarcane-based material. As opposed to older petrochemical-based products, PlantCorc is a sustainable closure technology that offers dramatic improvements in design and performance. "PlantCorc closures eliminate wine faults due to oxidation, reduction, and off-flavors associated with TCA and other contaminants and ensure bottle-to-bottle consistency," says Malcolm Thompson, Chief Innovation Officer and President of the Americas for Vinventions. Further reducing the environmental impact of carbon-based emissions, PlantCorcs are produced using sustainable manufacturing processes powered by renewable energy and are fully recyclable. It's hardly surprising, then, that mid-year 2017 reporting showed PlantCorc has emerged as the world's fastest-growing wine-closure technology. This year, PlantCorc will add 800- plus million units in sales worldwide from the Nomacorc Green Line alone "PlantCorc closures are currently outgrowing all other wine-closure categories—includ - ing screwcaps and cork-based closures—in terms of absolute growth in units," says Dr. Heino Freudenberg, President and CEO of Vinventions. "The success of the category is broadly based in both popular and premium wines and is increasingly experiencing strong growth with luxury wines in Burgundy, Alsace, Provence, Rhône Valley, Piedmont, Tuscany, Rioja, and Galicia, as well as Napa and Oregon." As a wine director, Lindgren appreciates the natural look and feel of Nomacorcs.
