Long hidden behind the Iron Curtain until it became independent in 1991, the country has begun to see more visitors due to its attractive beaches and dramatic mountains and forests. Its vast acres of fertile farmland have also earned Ukraine recognition as "Europe's breadbasket." Founded in 1794 by a decree of the Empress Catherine the Great, the major seaport of Odessa is known as the "Pearl of the Black Sea" and serves as a popular seaside destination for Ukrainians and other holiday makers in Eastern Europe. Many of the area's hotels have been built within the last few years, and tourists find them quite economical due to the favorable exchange rate. Visitors to the city can enjoy the city's rich winemaking and brandy production history, as well as the local seafood from many outstanding restaurants. Global Spirits is the leading international producer of alcoholic beverages in Eastern Europe. Established in 2008, its portfolio features fine products from the wineries and distilleries of the Ukraine and the United States. GLOBAL SPIRITS U.S.A.
