IN MY CITY: TORONTO
Stevie: WHAT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE
WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF
OR SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN THIS
PROFESSION?
JR: Invest in comfortable shoes and
never deny the restorative power of an
afternoon nap. Seriously, never take
any of this for granted. I was taught
by managers who took a chance with
me. Make sure you find great people
to learn from and work with. I am only
as good as the people who work with
me on my location team.
Stevie: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN
THE LMGI & HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A
MEMBER?
JR: I saw a reference to the then-
LMGA in an article I was reading
online and was curious as to what it
was. I did a little digging and I realized
the scope was international. As soon
as it rebranded as the LMGI, I sent in
my application to join and have been
a member since 2015. I'm glad I did!
And being part of the LMGI Comic-
Con panel is a personal and career
highlight for me. I've been a fan of
comic books/science fiction/fantasy
for as long as I could remember and
attending San Diego Comic-Con was
something I never imagined I would
have the chance to do. It was quite
a shock to see a room full of people
who genuinely wanted to hear about
what location professionals do. To be
there with my peers talking about our
profession was a professional thrill
that I will never forget. Meeting and
becoming fast friends with my fellow
panelists and LMGI members was
amazing and everything I was hoping
for when I joined the LGMI. The LMGI
has become a global extended family
that I keep in constant touch with and
visit when I can. We have a close-knit
group of location people in Toronto—
very much like a dysfunctional
family; but in the time that I've
been in the LMGI and meeting more
members in person, I am humbled
in the understanding that I'm part of
something larger. There is something
heartwarming to know we're not
alone in this crazy thing we all signed
up for.
