B M & T ••• July/August 2017 ••• www.blackmeetingsandtourism.com 14 A stay in Carmel is without a doubt, Webster-Dictionary's definition of a "getaway" (a place suitable for a vacation). Actually, Carmel by the Sea is more a dream-like, breathtaking escape from what many might call their day-to-day real- ity. I stayed at the Hofsas House Hotel in a deluxe suite. Hofsas House is not your typical, commercial hotel, but a beautiful European, Bavarian-inspired home away from home. All 38 units at Hofsas are uniquely and individually furnished, cre- ating a personalized, just for you kind of feel. Upon arrival, I enjoyed a great bottle of Pinot Noir while sitting next to the fireplace in my unit. The Dutch style doors opened to the relaxing sound of the waves crashing against the shore. The hotel was celebrating 70 years in business during my visit, and I had the pleasure of speaking directly with Carrie Theis - who is not only the owner and operator, but the granddaughter of Donna Hofsas, the founder of Hofsas House. It was inspiring to learn that this unique oasis is a family owned and operated hotel, offering comfort to travelers for over 7 decades. Although it was tempting to have enjoyed most of my short visit from the comfort of my hotel room – with my bottle of wine, fireplace, and ocean view, I realized that was only a sliver of what Carmel had to offer. Carrie provided me with a long list of activities, and although I wasn't able to take them all in, I did explore all that I could during my two night stay. be at in 70 op a m on all CARMEL BY THE SEA: THE DREAM GETAWAY BY JOHN BAKER Carmel by the Sea Beach, scenic landscape Photo Credit: Greta Gabaglio
