Orak joined 24 other sommeliers and wine buyers from ten states in late May for a three-day discovery of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignons and the diverse terroir that gives birth to them. "Everyone tends to look to Napa," she said, "but I'm looking forward to introducing my customers to the quality and value of Alexander Valley Cabernets." John Michael O'Shea, Wine Director at Dallas's Lombardi Restaurant Group, also left the Academy deeply impressed by the wines and by the community's all-for-one spirit. "One of the biggest surprises of the Cab Academy was the diversity of styles. I wasn't aware of how much Alexander Valley offers and you can really feel the passion of these people. You can hear it. It's also nice that they share amongst each other—not every wine region is like that." 2017 marks the sixth year the Alexander Valley Winegrowers have sponsored the Academy. Over the three days, wine industry Unspoiled valley: The Alexander Valley community has united behind agricultural preserve regulations to prevent over- development and congestion.
