But Disaronno Italian liqueur continues its domina- tion as a favorite in modern-day cocktail culture, as a staple on bar shelves and in the minds of consumers. The all-natural amaretto dates back to 1525, when an innkeeper in Saronno, Italy, delivered a flask of amber liqueur to painter Bernardino Luini as an act of gratitude. Since the Reina family rediscovered that recipe in 1600, the brand has developed a distinct international profile that rides the waves of cocktail trends. "Amidst today's craft cocktail revolu- tion, people are finding new ways to use Disaronno every day," says Matt Hirsch, Southeast U.S. Brand Ambassador, Disaronno International. "You're seeing all sorts of new ingredients that have been rediscovered, modern cocktails evolving—for example, washing spirits in fat to add more dimension, using molecu- lar gastronomy—globally, in the U.S. and especially in Miami." On the heels of his enthusiasm about the city's vibrant mixology scene, Hirsch led a mini-tour of three Miami bars utilizing Disaronno in a variety of ways old and new.
