8 The Costume Designer Summer 2017 The Emmy season is upon us, celebrating the wonderful work being done on television shows. It's a very diverse group of nominees, showing the vast range of Costume Designers in television have no boundaries. If you were to look back just 10 years, the nominees would have been a very different group. Costume Design for television now rivals feature films, and it's incredible to put a spotlight on this artistry, as Costume Design is a major part of the storytelling process. We have many opportunities to celebrate the Emmys. The Beverly Center and The Hollywood Reporter are hosting a cocktail reception and panel discussion celebrating Emmy-nominated Costume Designers and costumers at the Beverly Center on August 16. FIDM will be presenting the 11th Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition on Saturday, August 19, and the technical Emmys will be hosted on September 9 and 10. The CDG held a Costume Designer/costume supervisor roundtable discussion this past June. It was a great opportunity to discuss the state of the costume industry, the new challenges that are being brought to our departments, and how we can work together to create stronger, more efficient teams. This is an ongoing discussion as we face new challenges every day, so we need to stay united. The CDG Comic-Con Committee just came back from Comic-Con International, and they had a great time. This is one of our most enthusiastic committees, and they worked very hard to put on a great showing at the event, hosting two panels, one featuring Costume Designers and one on costume illustrators. They gave out awards to the attendees. A ribbon or a trophy from the CDG is a coveted award. Comic-Con has been a great recruiting ground for us, some of our very talented costume illustrators have been found there. We hosted our first CDG movie night, screening An American in Paris, Costume Designed by Orry-Kelly with original costumes provided by Diana Bayless Foster of the United American Costume Company. Our guest of honor was Gene Kelly's widow, Patricia Kelly, who spoke about the making of the movie. She was delightful and informative. It's our goal to keep the history of our Costume Designers alive. We plan on more movie nights in the future, putting our new CDG building to good use! This issue of The Costume Designer is all about technology. The film and television industry is moving ahead by leaps and bounds. As Costume Designers, we need to stay ahead of technology or we will be left behind. There are so many new possibilities at our fingertips. I want the CDG members to be at the forefront of tech. We will be hosting education seminars to show you all the new technology available to our industry, such as Marvelous Designer and new social media platforms like Nelo. Hope to see you there.
