16 ADVOCATE | SUMMER 2017 Around AEA O ver 400 teachers, education support professionals, and retired educators attended the annual Arizona Education Association's (AEA) Delegate Assembly on May 12-13, 2017, at the Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch. The Delegate Assembly is the Association's business meeting where delegates elected by their local association members discuss and vote on new business items, resolutions, and elect members of the AEA Board of Directors. AEA President Joe Thomas opened the Delegate Assembly asking delegates to match their actions to their demands, "We need to ask ourselves what we are willing to do in order to achieve great public schools for Arizona." Past Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Carolyn Warner gave the keynote speech encouraging educators to organize and prepare for the 2018 elections. This was Meghan Hauter's first Delegate Assembly. "I really like the camaraderie," says the Deer Valley Education Association member.
