AROUND AEA AEA Delegates Approve ESP Core Value at Annual Meeting Over 450 Association members attended this year's annual AEA Delegate Assembly, held April 27 – 28, at the Phoenix Marriott Mesa. This year's theme – Our Calling, Our Profession, Our Voice – focused on the role of the Association in our professional lives and in our desire to make great public schools. The AEA Delegate Assembly is the highest decision-making body within AEA. The Delegate Assembly is also Arizona's largest democratic deliberative body. Over the course of four business sessions spanning two days, delegates debate the vital issues that impact Arizona public education and set Association policy and activities for the year ahead. Elected delegates are responsible for engaging in debate about the policy and direction of the Association. They are also responsible for electing their representation on the AEA Board of Directors and NEA Board of Directors. This year delegates approved a new business item that added a fifth core value statement honoring Education Support Professionals (ESP) based on a recommendation from the AEA ESP Task Force. The new value statement: "Education Support Professionals as Valued Partners. We believe every Education Support Professional is an integral partner in all areas of the learning process and is valued within public education." The business item states: "AEA believes every Education Support Professional is an integral partner that is valued within Public Education. The ESP task force believes the addition of the new core value will help AEA in membership enrollment and retention. It is time for AEA to validate the support professional within the AEA community." In addition, delegates also approved a change in the number of board members from 24 to 17 in accordance to the Association's constitution and bylaws and based on a drop in membership numbers. To view new business items, go to the Governance page in the members-only section of the AEA website at www.arizonaea.org. AEA President Andrew F. Morrill welcomed delegates and opened the conference with Our new core value: "Education Support Professionals as Valued Partners." Continued on next page AEA Advocate ❘ Fall 2012 11
