The Tasting Panel and sister publication, The Somm Journal, organized a blind wine and spirits competition during the 74th Annual trade convention, bringing brands and wholesalers together in Orlando. But this evening was dedicated to Riboli Family Wines, celebrating the winery's 100-year anniversary from its Los Angeles-based tasting room and Maddalena restaurant to a present day estate-driven portfolio of wines. "It's hard to believe that a booming wine business once existed in Downtown Los Angeles," remarked fourth-generation Winemaker Anthony Riboli who heads up the company, along with his father, Santo, and uncle Steve. Today, the Riboli family not only enjoys the success of America's top-selling semi-sweet sparkling imported wine, Stella Rosa, but also produces value-driven brands such as San Antonio, San Simeon and Maddalena. While the family focused on Monterey County for Burgundian variet- ies, Riboli looked towards Paso Robles for Rhone and Bordeaux varieties. A new state-of-the-art winery and hos- pitality center opened this year under the San Antonio Winery name in Paso Robles and is producing wines starting with the 2016 harvest. The family made enormous investments not only in the winery, but in developing four estate vineyards in Paso's sub-regions of El Pomar District and Creston.
