The Vista Cafe is a state-of-the art teaching kitchen where students learn Culinary Arts and Life Skills. Elementary students learn how to sit at a table, use utensils, wash dishes, and safely handle the oven and stove, for instance. On weekdays, Tuesday through Thursday, Vista students prepare weekly lunch meals for the staff, after participating in cooking classes. Some meals are vegetarian. The most talented students will have the oppor- tunity to be enrolled in some of the best cooking classes in Los Angeles, including L.A. Trade-Tech, where they can achieve a certifi cate in Culinary Arts. Vista students have the opportunity to fi nd work in the fi elds of horticulture, hospitality, and the cu- linary arts, including jobs at local restaurants. Philanthropist Steve Tisch and his life-partner Katia Francesconi shared their passion about getting involved in this innovative garden-to-table program for children. "If they learn from a young age, they will take it forever, for the rest of their lives…" said Katia Francesconi, about the bright future she hopes this program will bring for the children and their families.
