DGA Events Roundup Niki Caro discusses The Zookeeper's Wife Director Niki Caro's new biographical drama, The Zookeeper's Wife, reveals the amazing true story of Antonina Zabinski and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski, the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo. When the Nazis invaded Poland during WWII, they were forced to report to the Reich's newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. But they also began covertly working with the Resistance and helped hundreds of Polish Jews escape from the infamous Warsaw Ghetto. Following the DGA membership screening on April 2 in Los Angeles, Caro sat down with Director Lesli Linka Glatter to discuss the making of The Zookeeper's Wife. Caro's credits also include the feature films McFarland, USA, A Heavenly Vintage, North Country, Memory & Desire and the Humanitas Prize-winning Whale Rider. Caro has been a DGA member since 2005. Charlie McDowell discusses The Discovery Set in the near future, Director Charlie McDowell's new sci-fi thriller, The Discovery, follows the effects of definitive proof of an afterlife via a scientific discovery by Dr. Thomas Harbor. As the world wrestles with what this all means, Harbor's son, who is also struggling with these issues, arrives at his father's compound where he falls for a woman with a troubled past. Following the April 7 DGA membership screening in Los Angeles, McDowell sat down with Director Zal Batmanglij to discuss the challenges of bringing the story to the screen. In addition to The Discovery, McDowell's credits include the feature films The One I Love; the movie for television Untitled Sarah Silverman Project; episodes of the series Dear White People and Silicon Valley; and the short Bye Bye Benjamin. He became a DGA member in 2015. photo: Directors Zal Batmanglij (moderator) and Charlie McDowell. photo by Shane Karns 2 3 photos by Elisa Haber 1 Creating the On-Screen World: A Directing for Professionals Seminar On March 18, the DGA Special Projects Committee presented the 13th installment of Directing for Professionals, a series that develops practical skills and techniques for Directors to work productively with their creative teams. Members gathered in the Los Angeles Headquarters Boardroom for Creating the On-Screen World: The Director/Production Designer Collaboration. The seminar explored how these positions work together to develop the visual language for a story and bring the on-screen world to life. In a conversation moderated by Directing for Professionals Subcommittee Chair Arthur Allan Seidelman, Directors Peter Atencio, Michael Goi and Kimberly Peirce; and Production Designers Todd Fjelsted, Catherine Smith and Mark Worthington discussed topics including: what is a production designer, how they work with the director to bring a vision to the screen, and how directors communicate with them to make sure they recognize the tone of the show. The final hour of the seminar included an open forum where the attendees could ask the panelists questions. Photos: 1.
