SPRING 2017 | ADVOCATE 27 Parker Education Association Member Named Outstanding Teacher of American History On January 28, 2017, Chad McKenzie, history teacher at Le Pera Elementary School, was recognized as the Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Arizona State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). McKenzie has taught American History at Le Pera for over twenty years. "My core teaching philosophy is nothing fancy – it's about consistency," McKenzie said in an interview with the Parker Pioneer newspaper. "The consistency of being at work every day, the consistency of your temperament as a teacher, and the consistency of your classroom expectations. You may not think that's much, but it is." The award was presented by the Havasu chapter of DAR. Eligibility and criteria for selection include Arizona teaching experience, evidence of an active knowledge of American history shared with students, and the teacher must foster a spirit of patriotism and loyal support of our country and constitutional government. In addition, this teacher must demonstrate the ability to relate history to modern life and events with high academic standards, requiring excellence at all times from students. This teacher must also be committed to his students and enjoy good rapport with them. Deer Valley Education Association Member Wins $5,000! This past November, NEA Member Benefits presented Highland Lakes Elementary School teacher Marilyn Behrens with a $5,000 check from NEA MB partner, Discover Credit Card. The check was presented to Behrens by DVEA President Maria Leyva and NEAMB Associate Antonio Galindo. Behrens was very excited and surprised to win the award. n
