86  /  the tasting panel  /  march 2017 A lmost 15 years ago, the country band Alabama released their hit song "I'm in a Hurry (and Don't Know Why)." It's an upbeat tune lamenting the loss of time and the craziness of the world around us with little explanation as to where the time went. While a great number of founders seem to unwittingly adopt that title as their anthem, Joseph Cimino, owner of 6 Degree Tequila, had taken a drastically different approach to his business initially. "Tequila kind of fell in my lap," he admits. Four-and-a-half years ago, Cimino found himself at an airport bar killing time during a delayed flight. Next to him sat a distillery owner, Michael Maestri from Jalisco, Mexico, tequila's birthplace. Tequila was discussed, beer was enjoyed, information was exchanged and both men went on their merry way. Cimino came across Maestri's business card some time later and decided to send him an email. "I reached out six months later, and Michael replied in five minutes," he recalls. A friendship and partnership was formed, and Cimino started making serious moves to learn more about the tequila business.
