2017 20 M A K E - U P A R T I S T S & H A I R S T Y L I S T S G U I L D A W A R D S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENTS Emmy ® -nominated make-up artist Leonard Engelman and Oscar ® - and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Barbara Lorenz, will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 2017 Make- Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, honoring outstanding achievements for make-up artists and hair stylists in motion pictures, television, commercials and live theater. The black-tie event will be held Sunday, February 19, 2017, at The Novo by Microsoft at LA Live. LEONARD ENGELMAN Lifetime Achievement Award: Make-Up When his father died in 1952, he was left his father's make-up case and he began experimenting. Leonard Engelman, Jr. applied for union membership and wrote, "Only through my acceptance into this union can my goal be reached, for this is the height of a career in make-up." He became an apprentice in 1963 under Bud Westmore, Director of Makeup at Universal Studios. Early in his career, he was active on the Executive Board, the Welfare Committee and was an important part of the Examination Committee. He also served as Make-up Craft President, and as Business Representative of IATSE Local 706. Leonard was also responsible for the expansion of our Local's title to the Make- Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild. In the 1970s, his work on Rod Serling's Night Gallery ran the gauntlet from horror to beauty. His ability to glorify the beauty of women created clients Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Debra Winger, Meg Ryan and of course, Cher. Leonard met Cher when they worked together on The Witches of Eastwick in 1987 and their work together continues to this very day. He created the charac- ters she portrayed on Suspect, Moonstruck, Mermaids, Faithful, Tea With Mussolini and Burlesque. He has done every kind of produc- tion, from her stage tours to album covers to feature fi lms and even documentaries. But he wasn't just Cher's make-up artist (or Val Kilmer's or Chris O'Donnell's or all of the above). His résu- mé of feature fi lms and television productions stands on its own. The diversity of his feature fi lm work on Cat People, Ghostbusters, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rocky IV, Sleepless in Seattle, Batman Forever, Heat, Batman & Robin, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Princess Diaries and dozens of others shows the complexity of his talent. He is a two-time winner of the Hollywood Make-Up Artist & Hair Stylist Guild Awards and has been nominated fi ve times. His work in television garnered him two Emmy nomina- tions and he served on the Makeup and Hairstyling Peer Group Committee. He also served as an Emmy make-up judge for many years. Along with Danny Striepeke, he also created the Danalen products, and is the owner of TaUT Cosmetics. Leonard was the fi rst Governor elected to the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. For 26 years, he served as the Chairman of the Branch Executive Committee, and was largely responsible for the formation of the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch; the name Make-up Award changed to Makeup and Hairstyling Award. Hair stylists are now a full category for the Makeup and Hairstyling Award. He began working toward that goal in 1993 and it was fi nally achieved in 2013. He led the fi ght to reestablish the possibility of three Oscar statues per fi lm; the Dick Smith Tribute and the Academy Honorary Governors Award for Dick Smith. He created the Oscars Symposium and then brought it to the Motion Picture Academy, which took over the event. It is now known as "Oscar Celebrates Makeup and Hairstyling" with more than 1,000 people in attendance and actors participating with their nominees, the day before the Oscars. His lifelong commitment to education has led to his position of Director and Director Emeritus of Education of Cinema Makeup School and as a lecturer at the American Film Institute and Chapman College on the importance of make-up and the coordination with cinematography.
