When it comes to sense of place, few craft spirits makers are doing it quite as local as Do Good Distillery. Modesto, California, native and founder Jim Harrelson has surrounded himself with family and like-minded friends in this now three-year long endeavor. Harrelson's brother-in-law serves as Do Good's Brand Ambassador, and his sister-in-law handles the web development. Liz Harrelson, Jim's wife, is the PR Director and Events Manager for the distillery, and their team is rounded out with ex-Marine Dano Brocchini, charged with the colorful and appropriately appointed title as "Head Stripper." They're a fun, family-run, self-funded company that's further along in three years than they thought they'd be in ten. Jim Harrelson is a former Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy, so it's no wonder that all of Do Good's spirits clock in at 91.1 proof (aka 9-1-1 on your phone's keypad). The company prides itself on its impressive and diverse array of smoked whiskies. Their Beechwood Smoked Whisky and Cherry Wood Smoked Whisky are smooth, complex and amazing to pair with grilled meats and earthy, full-bodied cheeses. Do Good's Peat Smoked Whisky is an homage to the great Islay single malts of Scotland. Aged in rye casks and finished in their own used rum barrels, the subtle peat smoke and slightly sweet finish makes for a perfect night of a dram and a cigar by the fire. Rounding out and anchoring their whisky offerings is the rich, spicy and bold Night Hawk Bourbon. Named for Harrelson's late brother-in-law and fel- low law enforcement officer Paul "Night Hawk" Katuszonek, this bourbon is spicy and bold, honoring its namesake and the distillery's moniker, "Be Brave. Be Fun. Seize the Day and Do Good!" —M. J. DO GOOD DISTILLERY: To Serve, Protect and Do Good january/february 2017  /  the tasting panel  /  1 1 1
