Fall 2016 The Costume Designer 49 Samantha Kuester and Jonah Ray, Mystery Science Theater 3000 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES Amazon's American Girl Melody CD Marie Schley and CD Mary Ianelli joining as ACD, are work- ing on Jill Soloway's new series, I Love Dick, for Amazon Studios, starring Kevin Bacon, Kathryn Hahn, and Griffin Dunne. What could be juicier than the title of the show?! Schley and Ianelli have a great time driving onto the lot and announcing the project … it never gets old. I Love Dick is a comedic and feminist exploration of the "female gaze"! In November, CD Barbara Chennault begins designing her third movie special for Amazon Studio TV. Each project is produced in affiliation with the American Girl doll franchise, highlighting the life and backstory of select dolls—Melody, Maryellen, Ivy, and Julie. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime is American Girl Melody, 1963: Love Has to Win, set in Detroit's segregation and civil rights era. Airing soon for the holiday season is American Girl Maryel- len, 1955: Extraordinary Christmas, and third, starting produc- tion is American Girl Ivy and Julie, 1976. Each period film is produced for children with a message of civility, empathy, caring, understanding, hope, and love. Chennault's ACD and collaborator for AG Melody was CD Deanna Saul and for AG Maryellen and Ivy and Julie is CD Nancy Shea. She gives applause and credit to her hard-working crew, including CD Nancy Butts-Martin. Notewor- thy is San Marcos Costume Rental, an industry rental house special- izing in clothes from the 1940s-1970s, owned by fellow member CD Stephen Chudej. BFN - WORK CD Michael Boyd literally went from Mudbound in Louisiana to the second install- ment of the Dolly Parton saga, Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love. The story picks up several weeks after the last film, as we see Little Dolly and her family headed into the Christmas season with many trials and tribulations ahead. Still set in the mid-1950s, Boyd enjoyed returning to Conyers, Georgia, and although it was a challenge to present a winter look during the hot Georgia summer, the crew and cast pulled it off without a hitch. Dolly Parton herself has a small cameo in the film. Other cast in- cludes Rick Schroder, Jennifer Nettles, Gerald McRaney, and the talented Alyvia Alyn Lind, who plays Little Dolly Parton. CD Samantha Kuester just completed the latest season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 for Netflix. Kuester says she's never worked on a series that had such a cult following! Fans raised over $5 mil- lion on Kickstarter to fund the project. Produced and directed by Joel Hodgson, it stars Felicia Day, Patton Oswalt, and Jonah Ray. CD Lou Eyrich has taken on Feud, the newest series written and directed by Ryan Murphy for FX, chronicling the notorious feud between Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) and Bette Davis (Susan Sa- randon). Assisting is newlywed CD Hannah Jacobs. CD Allison Leach also lends an assisting hand, and Lou feels lucky to have CD Ingrid Ferrin on board as well. Dolly Parton saga, Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love CD Hope Hanafin is having a wonderful time designing the pilot The Sinner in the gorgeous city of Charleston, South Carolina. Di- rected by Antonio Compos and created by Derek Simonds, it stars Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman. The behind-the-scenes highlight was the unique bonding experience provided from being evacuated by Hurricane Matthew to a location that was hit much harder than the original location. Nothing like a flashlight "campfire" to bring the creative team together. After completing Season 5 of The Mindy Project, including the 100th episode, President and CD Salvador Perez went directly onto his next design project, Pitch Perfect 3, shoot- ing in Atlanta, Georgia. Directed by Trish Sie, with many of the lead actors in returning roles. Perez says of the milestone, "As a Costume Designer, my goal is to dress the character, when the actor and the audience love it as much as they have on The Mindy Project, it is so satisfying!
