WINTER 2016 | ADVOCATE 7 at the capitol n Amphitheater Education Association member, Representative Chris Ackerley visited Sahuarita Primary School and spoke to over 80 first graders about Arizona Government and voting. The first participants in this year's Take Your Legislator to School initiative were Representative Paul Boyer and Thunderbird High School Teacher and 2014 AEF™ Arizona Teacher of the Year Ambassador for Excellence Jonathan Parker. "With so much talk of education and changes in education policy on TV and in the news, I believe it's my duty to keep the door open to any elected official," said Glendale Union Education Association President Jonathan Parker. "At the end of the day, there's a big gap between what we do in the classroom and what legislators discuss on the floor. I want to be a part of the solution to closing that gap." How does it work? Teachers and legislators are matched based on legislative district. The shadowing and time spent between teachers and legislators is unique to each pair. See what participants said about the program on page 40. Check out these photos from this past year's visits and visit azedfoundation. org/take-your-legislator-to-school for more information.
