Paul: "The best part about this mix for me was that fact that Netflix let us get in the studio for an extra day to create a 5.1 mix for the Toronto International Film Festival. During this additional session, di- rector Brian McGinn and I had a blast find- ing some subtle, yet dramatic ways to im- prove the mix. In fact, though we thought we were already finished, we couldn't imagine releasing the film without these changes. We found the kind of things that can only be found with time for another pass. That is what mixing is like. The more time you spend, the better it gets." What technology did you rely on for this? Stangroom: "We relied heavily on ProTools 12. We use Soundminer for all of our sound effects libraries. I also use Native Instruments' Reaktor a lot these days to find variations of realistic synth sounds to layer with the ambiences and music in the films I work on. Omnisphere is another great tool that helps us set the mood and tone, especially in a film that wants to help build a sense of unease or dread." STORMSTOCK CAPTURES HURRICANE MATTHEW IN 4K ARLINGTON, TX — Cinematographer Martin Lisius, who for nearly three decades has tracked and photo- graphed some of the most violent (and beautiful) weather in the world for his stock footage company, StormStock (www.stormstock.com), recently followed major Hurricane Matthew along the Florida coast, bracing against 90mph winds and enduring stinging, horizontal rain. "Yes, the rain actually stings if you aren't completely covered," Lisius says. "To me, filming a hur- ricane is like standing in front of a fire hose with a camera for several hours. It's invigorating!" Lisius, who captured the only Super 35mm film, and some of the only HD video, of Hurricane Katrina making landfall 11 years ago, uses special techniques to film hurricanes. "Rain protection is critical," he says. "I carefully tape my cameras and lenses, and then add rain coats to them. And, as soon as I can, I rinse them in fresh water to remove sea salt." And, what about safety? "Just read the hurricanes chapter in my safety book," he says, referring to The Ultimate Severe Weather Safety Guide, which he wrote based on his personal experiences to help save lives. His new material is available for licensing exclusively through StormStock, which he founded in 1993. Samples of Lisius' Hurricane Matthew footage is also available at the Vimeo channel www.vimeo.com/ martinlisius/hurricanematthew.
