86 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2016 { new york blind tasting } RECENTLY IN NEW YORK, THE SOMM JOURNAL'S EAST COAST EDITOR, DAVID Ransom, sat down with four of the city's top sommeliers for a blind tasting of Chardonnays at Marta restaurant. The sommeliers were asked to taste ten wines in random order. They discussed the wines at length and shared opinions, tasting notes and thoughts on pairings. As the tasting was blind, participants did not know the wines and were asked to guess their origin from anywhere in the world. The only information provided was the variety: Chardonnay. Unbeknownst to them, the wines were all either from California or Burgundy. The tasting was hosted by Sonoma County's Jordan Vineyard & Winery, who included three of their wines: Jordan's Russian River Valley 2014, 2013 and 2009, the latter to show the aging potential of its Chardonnay. The two other California wines were Rombauer Vineyards 2014 Carneros Chardonnay and Kistler Vineyards 2014 Les Noisetiers, Sonoma Coast. Entries from France included Bouchard Père & Fils 2013 Meursault Les Clous; Louis Latour 2013 Meursault Genevrières Premier Cru; Louis Latour 2012 Puligny-Montrachet Les Truffières; Benoît Ente 2013 Puligny Montrachet; and Bouchard Père & Fils 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet. Participating sommeliers included Eduardo Porto Carreiro, Beverage Director at Untitled and Studio Café at the Whitney; Michaël Engelmann, Master Sommelier and Wine Director at The Modern; Jeff Kellogg, Beverage Director at Maialino, who holds an Advanced Sommelier certi - fication and is the recipient a Rudd Scholarship; and Jack Mason, Master Sommelier and Wine Director at the host venue for the day.
