Respiratory Therapy - According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many employers prefer to hire respiratory therapists who have certification. Certification is not always required, but it is widely respected throughout the occupation. Certification usually requires graduating from an accredited program and passing a certification exam and is often required in order to get a state license. Employment of Respiratory Therapists is expected to grow by 17.7 percent from 2012 to 2022 Pharmacy Technician - As a result of advances in pharmaceutical research, more prescription medications are being used to fight diseases, and employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to grow by 18.5 percent from 2012 to 2022 (California Employment Development Department). Vocational Nursing - As the U.S. population ages, the overall need for healthcare is expected to increase. This trend will lead to increased employment of licensed vocational nurses (LVN) in hospitals, physicians' offices, and other healthcare settings. Employment of Vocational Nurses is expected to grow by 25.7 percent from 2012 to 2022 (California Employment Development Department). Medical Billing and Coding - Federal legislation mandating individual coverage may increase the number of health insurance customers, including high-risk individuals who are more likely to file claims. This is expected to increase the demand for claims adjusters to determine which treatments are approved and how much the company will pay. Employment of Medical Insureance Billers is expected to grow by 29.1 percent from 2012 to 2022 (California Employment Development Department). Health Information Technology- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems continue to become more common, technicians with computer skills will be needed to use them, and job prospects will be best for those with a certification in health information. Employment of Medical Records and Health Information Technicians is expected to grow by 20.6 percent from 2012 to 2022 (California Employment Development Department). Physical Therapist Assistant - In today's thriving health care market, employment of Physical Therapist Assistants is expected to grow by 35.6 percent from 2012 to 2022 (California Employment Development Department) – a rate far surpassing the average for all occupations. Occupational Therapy Assistant- Be a part of this rewarding and growing field. Employment of Occupational Therapy Assistants is projected to grow 43.8 percent from 2012 to 2022 (California Employment Development Department). Radiography- As the population grows older, there will be an increase in medical conditions, such as breaks and fractures caused by osteoporosis, which can require imaging to diagnose them. Radiologic Technologists will be needed to maintain and use the diagnostic equipment. This is just a small sampling of the opportunities available. The choices are many! As you can see, there are definite benefits to receiving vocational training. So if you are already thinking, "I'm ready to find colleges near me," then you're ahead of the game. You just need to find the right program from among many possible colleges, universities, and trade schools. Programs that fit your aspirations might be offered at a school near you!
