Right: A presentation sketch by Peter Rubin, modeled in Modo and rendered in Photoshop, brings all the design elements of the lobby set together—colors, shapes and scale—within the context of lighting in the space. The light fixtures were custom designed and built for multiple uses, including live fire effects for the moment when the portal has begun to open, and the art deco sconces and urns begin to belch live flames. Below: A detail view of the lobby with finishes which included four colors of marble in the patterned floor and columns, printed on 4' x 8' sheets of MDF from custom- built graphic files for control of color and grain, brass accents, and Venetian plaster ceilings and wall panels. Bottom: A drawing by Set Designer Richard Mays, modeled in Rhino 3D, is one of many sheets of details for the lobby's deco-styled railing. 6" 3'-6 1/8" 9'-0 1/8" 6 1 /2 " 11'-1 5/8" 1 '-5 1 / 2 " 8 ' - 4 7 / 8 " 2 ' -1 1 / 2 " 2 3/8" 2 3/8" 2 ' - 7 3 / 8 " 2'-1 1/2" 6" 3 1 /4 " 6 1 / 2 " 1 ' -5 3 /4 " R7'-5" 3 1/4" B L A Y O UT B B A B.1 A . 2 A B A . 1 A B B .1 A A .1 A A A B B F SD A CENTERLINE C E N T E R L I N E C E N T E R L IN E CENTERLINE CE N T E R L I N E C EN T ER L I N E C UR VE D S E C TIO N MATCH MAT'LS AND DIMENSIONS IN DWG 8.0 (THIS SET) TO TIE-IN THIS RAIL TO MATCH ALL OTHERS SEE ART DIRECTOR CU R B COL. There was great fun referencing the first movies, with a wink to those familiar with the material, but it was important that the inside jokes not become ponderous and impenetrable to a new audience. "It was helpful to have available several physicists that would provide current (if sometimes far-fetched) theory to underpin the science that makes the supernatural possible. If a proton pack emits a particle stream that can capture a ghost, we wanted to have some clue of how it might actually work." An important aspect of this discussion was the question of style in the Production Design. A story about ghosts can go a lot of directions. The choice here was to play the supernatural elements as fiction, and the surrounding world of the story as realistic and familiar. Thus, the sets would be thoroughly detailed and complex and character-driven, and they would specifically reference Manhattan and its sensibilities whenever appropriate. The script's Ghostbusters are scientists, and the story called for four separate laboratories, along with other science-driven elements. It was important that this science in particular appeared authentic and grounded in real theory. It was helpful to have available several physicists that would provide
