P E R S P E C T I V E | S E P T E M B E R / O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6 55 but they're in there. The musical elements (band posters, etc.) are Rob Tapert's suggestions. Bruce described the overall décor as quintessential Michigan, from the sports teams to the local product advertisements, layer after layer of detail in the set. We even created Shemps Beer, a fictitious brand that goes way back to early Evil Dead days. Shemp refers to a stand-in actor and relates to the Three Stooges, an in joke with all three producers. CREMATORIUM The Crematorium is a little piece of industrial Michigan history. It's not a typical crematorium and looks more like an old ironworks, a neglected concrete structure with underground furnaces and all kinds of places to hide. It's gloomy, rusty and dark, the place that becomes the nesting ground of the evil spawn. A lot of death passes through these doors and with that comes an energy that hovers within the walls like a toxic fog. DEMOLITION DERBY SET Like all things in Elk Grove, the demolition derby set is lost in time and rundown. In order to have full control of the environment, the set was built and dressed specifically for the show to have full control of lighting, atmosphere and safety. It's haunting when you walk into the middle of the ring with the lights on, as if something could attack you from any direction, a battleground with high-banked walls and faded carnival banners, weather-beaten and neglected, its glory days long gone. Empty concession trailers and hay bales line the perimeter giving it a sense of being sort of a Thunderdome arena: two will enter, only one will leave...the perfect setting for Ash to battle his possessed car. DELTA 88 There are five different versions of the Oldsmobile Delta 88 on hand, all in different states of repair. At any given time, some are covered in blood, wheels are missing, engines taken out. There are different applications for each of these cars, and one of them is actually Sam's original car from the Evil Dead movies. This vehicle gets carefully looked after while the others are more like stunt cars with custom-fitted pneumatics and suspensions used for specific scenes. Keeping Sam's original classic Delta 88 is one way of maintaining ties to the Evil Dead franchise. All the cars have been shipped to New Zealand from the States and finding repair parts can be a tough task. Windshields and doors are forever being replaced. This season we have started to mold panels and parts allowing us to build our own when needed. We try to collect as many as possible to make sure there is a surplus of parts at any given time. BLOOD ON THE SET This season, every story seems filled with all sorts of blood and bodily fluids. Whenever a new script arrives, the Art Department begins thinking: How much blood is Above, top to bottom: The Crematorium, gloomy, rusty and dark, becomes the nesting ground of the evil spawn. Ruby Cross (played by Lucy Lawless) holds the NECRONOMICON—THE BOOK OF THE DEAD—as she confronts the demon spawn in the crematorium's furnace room. Another view of the underground furnaces; the energy of death hovers within these walls like a toxic fog.
