BITS & PIECES www.postmagazine.com 6 POST AUGUST 2016 STORMSTOCK DP MARTIN LISIUS TRACKS, FILMS THE 'PERFECT STORM' ARLINGTON, TX — StormStock (www.stormstock.com) founder and cinematog- rapher Martin Lisius intercepted a "mega-supercell" thunderstorm in Nebraska recently and fi lmed it in 4K and 6K video. The isolated storm tracked across the rural Nebraska Sand Hills region for several hours producing tornadoes, giant hail and continuous lightning. A supercell is a thunderstorm with a persistent, rotating updraft. They are the rarest thunderstorm type in the world, and the most prolifi c producer of signifi - cant tornadoes and large hail. Even less common is the "mega-supercell," which is large, long-lived and so powerful that it produces its own area wind fi eld. "I've only seen a handful of mega-supercells in my 30 years of photographing storms," says Lisius, who does his own forecasting. "The Sand Hills storm was rotating hard and was almost fully on the ground at times. It was like a massive vacuum cleaner and a tennis ball size ice machine maker rolled into one." Lisius, who shot the material using the new Sony a6300 says, "I normally shoot with my Sony FS7, or a Red Dragon, but on this trip I fl ew to Nebraska and needed something compact to fi t in my carry-on, like the a6300. I shot us- ing a Canon 24-105 f/4 L and a Metabones Speedbooster Ultra EF to E-mount adapter, and a Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 for shots around dusk." According to Lisius, realtime video was shot as UHD 4K, but he also shot 6K (6,000-by-4,000) using stills for time-lapse and cut the footage on Final Cut Pro X. "Even though all of this material was shot very fl at using one of the a6300 Cine presets, I did not use LUTs in post," he notes. "I simply used the basic ex- posure and color tools in FCPX to add contrast and a touch of saturation." A portion of the material will be available for licensing through StormStock, while some will be reserved for Lisius' 4K documentary about supercells, which is currently in production. Martin Lisius captured this mega- supercell using a Sony a6300 camera. SOCIETY WELCOMES TRIO OF DIRECTORS; MERGES LIVE-ACTION & ANIMATION UNDER ONE BANNER LOS ANGELES — LA-based production company Society has solidifi ed its fi lm, broadcast and branded content off erings by aligning sister animation company The Academy under one single banner. The newly-unveiled Society not only houses both live-action and animation services, but a bolstered directorial ros- ter that includes the addition of mixed-media from Brikk; motion graphics from Cub Studios and storytelling from We Think Things. "When we started Society two years ago, we talked a lot about remaining nimble enough to stay current," says co-founder/executive producer Harry Calbom. "On our Website, we state a commitment to 'always be built for now.' And although we've historically drawn a line between animation and live-action production, we've seen more and more overlap between those divisions, a grad- ual blurring of the lines." With the merge of Academy into Society, the former's staff animation producer David "Guti" Rosado, will now serve as head of post production for Society, joining a roster of not only the aforementioned new hires, but such direc- tors as J. Austin Wilson, Zia Mohajerjasbi, Sean Pecknold, David Viau, Christian Sorensen Hansen, Rachel Lee Goldenberg, Megan Griffi ths and Lynn Shelton. As Society unites operations from both levels of the production spectrum, the company continues work on feature fi lms, documentaries and campaigns for the likes of Nissan, Gatorade, Walgreens, Audi, Intel and Wendy's.
