ACTIVATE LEADERSHIP Aspen Truths to Empower Millennial Leaders by Jon Mertz Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite Activate Leadership: Aspen Truths to Empower Millennial Leaders is a non-fiction business book written by Jon Mertz. The author has been active in marketing and business development, and maintains a blog called Thin Difference. He was concerned about the skewed impression and stereotypical image many business leaders from other generations have of millennials, whom they consider to be ego-centric, unable to commit to one job for any period of time and, while socially active, somewhat superficial in their approach to others. Mertz was able to see how the interconnectedness and social media savviness of the millennials could be a huge asset for them in business, but he was concerned how they could bridge what seemed a large gap in outlook and perception from that of other generations. A winter snowshoe walk in the Rockies and a chance encounter with an aspen grove helped Mertz formulate his approach. Jon Mertz's non-fiction business book, Activate Leadership: Aspen Truths to Em- power Millennial Leaders, is inspiring and informative. He helped me to understand the millennial generation, their gifts and connectedness, and the struggles they've had as a result of the harsh economic envi- ronment. His metaphor of the aspen is in- spired, and I found myself reading the parts of this book that related to that re- markable tree out loud to a friend. It cap- tures the social connection the millennials and those tech-savvy members of the old- er generations share, and shows how that interconnection can make millennial lead- ers thrive. I loved his brief case studies and the way Mertz used them to drive home points and concepts. This is a business book that will change the way many think about business-related texts. It reads like a dream or, at least, a very compelling story told directly to you by someone sitting op- posite you in a coffee shop or online chat. There's a lot of wisdom here both for mil- lennials and those of us who share the planet with them. Activate Leadership: Aspen Truths to Empower Millennial Lead- ers is most highly recommended.
