I didn't before tasting through the Fetzer portfolio. According to the official site, "B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental perfor- mance, accountability and transparency." Basically, like Ben & Jerrys (a fellow B Corp), Fetzer does a whole lot of good in addition to just making ice cream, I mean wine. Established in 1968, Fetzer has been involved in a whole slew of environmental and sustainable efforts since the late eighties. The stand-outs include: • Committed to "zero waste" since 1990, now Zero Waste Certified since 2014. • First winery in California to operate on 100% renewable energy. • First winery to verify and report greenhouse gas emissions to The Climate Registry, since reducing those emissions by 50%. • ISO 9001 Certified. • An immense 75,000-square-foot solar array provides much of the energy needed to power the Hopland winery. These efforts (and several unlisted others) have resulted in far too many awards from the EPA and the like to list, but I do think it's worth mention- ing they were the only U.S.winery that attended the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference. All of this is why it's particularly mind- blowing that the immensely popular 2014 Shaly Loam, Monterey County, Gewürztraminer has an SRP of $10. Baked pear, baked peach and orange blossoms countered by just enough acid. In case you were wondering, no, there isn't a Fetzer Gewürztraminer flavored Ben & Jerry's. One can dream though.
