50 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } APRIL/MAY 2016 { education } WHENEVER I THINK BACK ON THE EVOLUTION OF MY OWN CAREER PATH IN WINE— from public relations and marketing, to professional wine writer, instructor, judge and critic of wine—I can point to one "tipping point" (to borrow a phrase from Malcolm Gladwell) and that was the day I earned my WSET Advanced Certification in Wines and Spirits. I'm an active learner, and WSET courses are all about participation—tasting, verbalizing, debat - ing and discussing, while also actively absorbing as much information about regional nuances, styles of wines and production methods as possible. And at the Napa Valley Wine Academy, where I'm an active content creator and instructor, it's all about experiential learning from instructors who are passionate and enthusiastic people. But truly, it's all about how you—the prospective student and wine industry career seeker—can benefit from tackling wine certification courses and achieving your own tipping point. To get you there, we've teamed up with The SOMM Journal to promote several exciting scholarship opportunities for wine enthusiasts looking to bolster their confidence in wine, or for the up-and-coming trade professional seeking that hallowed credential. "We feel that giving students access to the world's most respected wine certification, no matter what the student's economic standing, is vital to helping the wine industry stay a vibrant industry," says Christian Oggenfuss, CEO, Napa Valley Wine Academy. "It has always been our mission to both elevate wine education and make it more accessible to everyone."
