Paving Their Way How these pros found their path to entertainment. By Randi Altman Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were a kid? Amazingly, I always knew I wanted to tell stories. Many others aren't as lucky — they have interests, but making it into a career might not be in the cards. Some of the industry pros we interviewed for this piece were driven from childhood to create visual effects or films. Others sort of found their way there circuitously. What they all have in common is they are all very talented and all very successful — and they love what they do. BEN GROSSMANN From small town Alaska to front stage at the Oscars for his VFX work on Hugo. Kinda cool. While Ben Gross- mann was growing up in Delta Junction, Alaska, a town of 1,500, TV wasn't a big part of his life. The family didn't get its first TV until after the first Gulf War, so they could get the news — but he did get to see some films. And those films influenced what he wanted to be when he grew up — an archeologist like Indiana Jones, a secret agent like James Bond, and an astronaut like, well… cool astronauts! But after realizing that the spaceships didn't shoot lasers, he gave up that dream. Salar Saleh, as a college freshman,with the first computer he ever created graphics on.
