The set is located in Millbrook, ON. Above: The Fairmount street in Millbrook dressed for winter. the house was nice and the barns were too huge. I finally came up with what I thought was a good solution since we didn't have the budget to build them: the exterior of one house and barn at one location, coupled with the interior of the house next door. Both properties belonged to the same family. The exterior was painted white and I designed wood details so that the entire house looked made of real clapboard, instead of the synthetic siding we couldn't afford to replace. The interior was entirely refurnished, repainted with tuffback over the owners' wallpaper in the living room, some existing period wallpaper duplicated and a new room built in the middle of the second-floor landing. We then got hit by. Then came another challenge on this shoot: the snow. A huge snowstorm prevented us from showing Anton the farms before the holidays. Toronto typically has cold winters with some snow, or lots of snow with less cold. It's always a guess which it's going to be, and that makes planning exterior shots difficult. Snow and icicles were created for some scenes (like Norma's exterior New York apartment), and snow had to be completely melted and live plants brought in (like Pier Angeli's exterior Los Angeles home). A 1920s mansion with a Spanish feel was used for Pier's house, and Jimmy's interior/exterior Los Angeles apartment was built within it. Anton wanted to shoot the exterior in Los Angeles but the budget didn't allow the extra day needed to get there, so I suggested the scene be shot at his front door. I designed a set that enclosed the space just outside the front door with breezeway blocks and shrubs so that the scene could have the conversation happen all in the confined area. This was built inside of the mansion's two-story living room. His Los Angeles apartment was a build in one of the mansion's large upstairs bedrooms.
