48  /  the tasting panel  /  december 2015 TECHNOLOGY L ast weekend, I sat down to play a board game with my wife and friends that resulted in some pretty mean name-calling. We weren't playing for money, mind you; we were playing simply to win. Despite our embarrassing loss, we at least were able to laugh at nearly divorcing over something so trivial. But it's exactly this innate sense of competition in all of us that Andrea Bearbower, Director, Sales Capabilities at Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, is using to her advantage. This concept, known as "gamification," is the process of applying engaging gaming design concepts to training scenarios; and it works really well, especially with motivated sales types, even if winning simply means, according to Bearbower, "bragging rights."
