DGA Events Roundup Sam Mendes discusses SPECTRE 007 is back and plunging headlong into danger in Director Sam Mendes' new action feature, SPECTRE. In the film, a cryptic message from the past leads James Bond (Daniel Craig) once again into harm's way as he seeks to uncover a sinister organization. As he peels back the layers of deceit, what he ultimately discovers may shock him to his core. Following the DGA membership screening in New York on November 4, Mendes spoke about the challenges of taking on such an iconic character as Bond for the second consecutive entry, during a conversation moderated by Director Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher). In addition to SPECTRE, Mendes' filmography includes the feature films Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, Away We Go, and the previous 007 feature Skyfall. In 2000 he took home the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for American Beauty. In Helgeland's take on this true crime tale, Tom Hardy plays both Ronald and Reginald Kray, two of the most notorious criminals in British history. The film details both the relationship that bound together these two distinctly different personalities, and charts their gruesome career from their rise to power as they carved out an organized crime empire in the East End of London in the 1950s and 1960s, to their ultimate downfall on the cusp of the 1970s. Helgeland spoke about the challenges of bringing this true story to the screen in a conversation with Director Antoine Fuqua (Southpaw) following the DGA screening in Los Angeles on October 15. In addition to Legend, Helgeland's work includes the feature films 42, The Order, A Knight's Tale, Payback; and the Tales from the Crypt episode "A Slight Case of Murder." He has been a member of the DGA since 1997. photo: Directors Antoine Fuqua (moderator) and Brian Helgeland See video from this Q&A at www.dga.org. photo by Shane Karns photo by Shane Karns Angelina Jolie Pitt speaks about By the Sea A stop in an idyllic French seaside town helps rekindle a couple's failing romance in Director Angelina Jolie Pitt's new feature, By the Sea. Set in the mid-1970s Jolie Pitt's film features herself as Vanessa and Brad Pitt as Roland, a couple who find their marriage in crisis. But after spending time with both the locals and fellow travelers during a visit to a tranquil beach resort, they begin the work of coming to terms with their own unresolved issues. In a conversation moderated by Director Marc Levin (Freeway: Crack in the System) following the DGA membership screening in New York on November 3, Jolie Pitt spoke about the challenges of making the film, and the unique situation posed by having to work both sides of the camera while working with her real life significant other. In addition to By the Sea, Jolie Pitt's filmography includes the feature films Unbroken and In the Land of Blood and Honey and the documentary A Place in Time. She joined the DGA in 2013. photo: Directors Marc Levin (moderator) and Angelina Jolie Pitt See video from this Q&A at www.dga.org. photos by Marcie Revens
