6 dga quarterly Robert Abele ("Faces in 'The Crowd'") says the combina- tion of intelligence and emotion in Paul Weitz's responses to King Vidor's The Crowd was fun to experience. "Mixed in with his acute ob- servations were the gasps, laughs, and ahs of a real movie lover." Abele is an Los Angeles- based journalist and critic whose work ap- pears in the Los Angeles Times and Variety. Terrence Rafferty ("The Director's Chair") says Taylor Hackford was one of the easiest and most enjoyable interviews he has ever done. "My biggest problem was resisting the temptation to talk all day about music and dance." Rafferty is a regular con- tributor to The New York Times Book Review and the author of The Thing Happens: Ten Years of Writing About the Movies. Margy Rochlin ("From the Bronx to Hol- lywood") believes that Zetna Fuentes' upbeat attitude con- tributed greatly to her rise as a director of episodic television. "When I asked her how she dealt with pushback from an uncooperative crew, she said, 'I crush them with kindness and do a great job; a killer episode always shuts them up.'" Rochlin is a regular contributor to The New York Times. Rob Feld ("End of the Road") was fasci- nated to see how Alan Ball, in discussing the finale of Six Feet Under, still focused his filmmaking technique on the more hopeful elements of life and his characters' redemption. Feld teaches filmmaking at NYU and is the host of "Day for Night" on Huffington Post. Ann Farmer ("One Director, One Mini- series") says that the one thing in common among the five mini- series directors she in- terviewed is that "they all clearly embraced the challenges of be- ing a single director on a story they could frame from beginning to end." Farmer lives in Brooklyn and is a regular contributor to The New York Times and Emmy magazine. David Geffner ("On the Job With…") says that "after doing the 'On the Job' col- umn for 10 years, I'm still surprised and impressed by the range of stories from the Guild's working members." Geffner is edi- tor in chief of the International Cinema- tographers Guild magazine, ICG. Jill Greenberg ("The Director's Chair") says, "The great thing about shooting digital is the collaboration aspect. It was just Taylor and me in his New York home, and together we were finding the shot and crafting the portrait that he felt best por- trayed him." Greenberg is an internation- ally exhibited fine artist and photographer. Her work has appeared in Wired, The New Yorker, and Entertainment Weekly. Richard Schickel ("The World Accord- ing to Howard Hawks") says in his new book, Keepers: The Greatest Films—and Personal Favorites—of a Moviegoing Lifetime, that Howard Hawks' body of work may be the greatest in American film. In his career of more than five decades, Schickel has written 37 books and directed 37 documentaries, many of them about directors. ® CO NTR I B UTO R S James Greenberg Editor in Chief Nancy Duckworth Art Director Wanda Lau Copy Editor Brandon Kyle Goco Editorial Assistant Tricia Noble Design Associate Jovita Dominguez Photo Researcher Darrell L.
