october 2015  /  the tasting panel  /  63 Dark Horse 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, California $10 Blended with a touch of Semillon and Albariño, pungent floral, steely notes emerge alongside pineapple, melon and goose- berry. The salinity adds to a fine finish. 92 Dark Horse 2013 Chardonnay, California $10 Tropical banana/pineapple shows itself first, followed by baked pear custard tart and lemon chiffon. The layers don't stop. Liston blends in some Viognier and Gewürztraminer that add an unctuous mouthfeel, but the mineral-stone leaves a salt deposit on the tongue. Aged in French and American oak. Tastes like a $40 wine. 92 Dark Horse 2014 Pinot Noir, California $10 One of the new stablemates, Liston blends in Grenache and Gewürztraminer to create rose petals and raspberry bouquet and earth and cinnamon on the palate. Sweet tobacco, sassafras, molas- ses and cedar are intricately woven in. 91 Dark Horse 2013 Merlot, California $10 Dornfelder, a blue-fruited grape, is a component of this feminine, lush beauty, along with Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah. From its opaque, inky hue to its expres- sive espresso, cherry, tar and tobacco character, it is lightly textured for such a dense tasting wine. For us, this wine jockeys for top position. 93 Beth Liston is the talented Dark Horse whisperer.
