And that sinister comment on your blog is probably the work of a faker or troll. The Internet, that transformative force driving innovation, communication and col- laboration worldwide, also has a dark under- belly. In this murky world of fakers and trolls, nothing is as it seems. One expert computer analysis found that "about one-third of all consumer reviews on the Internet are fake." That the restaurant review you referred to last night may come from someone paid by the restaurateur or by the restaurateur's rival. Believe the credibility of that glowing book review on Ama- zon at your peril; the author may have ghostwritten it. Joseph M. Reagle Jr. jumps into this cesspool with a reporter's gusto, delv- ing into the unlit corners of Yelp, Twitter and coder conferences. His findings might not surprise those who are deeply embedded in the Internet culture, but for most readers, his exploration is an eye-opener. At times, Reagle veers into the stilted prose of academia and his language can be vulgar, since that accurately reflects the material he's covering. Nonetheless, this mostly ap- proachable book delves into a crucial topic. getAbstract recom- mends it to online retailers, investors, entrepreneurs, and anyone who ever read anything on or ordered anything using the Inter- net. And that, of course, includes nearly everyone. Joseph M. Reagle Jr. | MIT Press 2015 | 240 pg. | ISBN: 9780262028936 5. GROW YOUR VALUE News anchor Mika Brzezinski finds peace in her success as a professional and a mother. Co-host of MSNBC's Morning Joe and best-selling author Mika Brzezinski seems to have it all – celebrity, a successful ca- reer, marriage and children. Yet even as she worked to empower other women through her books and seminars, Brzezinski ques- tioned her own worth as a wife and mother. Here, she details her journey to find the same value in her personal life that she achieved professionally. As a mother, Brzezinski confesses to feeling guilty. She says oth- er successful women are unwilling to address this topic, though thousands of books and articles on the issue beg to differ. Readers may find her problems – reconciling success, fame and salary with neglecting her family – enviable. And some may have difficulty relating to the experiences of the high-level working women Brzezinski depicts as her inner circle, including Olym- pian Bonny Warner Simi, former White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers and cosmetic queen Bobbi Brown. Nonetheless, getAbstract believes women facing professional challenges will enjoy getting to know them and will find value in Brzezinski's ac- count of her quest for inner harmony.
