WEB-BASED SERIES BREAK OUT www.postmagazine.com 28 POST SEPTEMBER 2015 ith myriad options for viewing orig- inal entertainment content today, consumers have an unparalleled opportu- nity to break free of conventional broad- cast and cable networks and assemble their own menu of programming choices. But in this brave new world of Web se- ries and streaming content, basic principles still apply for creators. "Good entertain- ment is good entertainment; the rules are still in place no matter what platform you produce for," says Remi Aubuchon, execu- tive producer and showrunner for Powers, which airs on Sony PlayStation Network. "We're able to take bigger chances on platforms like the Web or PlayStation than on a standard TV network, but ultimately you have to produce a good TV show that people want to watch." POWERS An edgy drama following two homicide detectives who investigate crimes in- volving superhumans, Powers is the first original scripted series produced by Sony Pictures Television for Sony's PlayStation Network. Season 1 featured 10, one-hour episodes. The first three episodes were released simultaneously last March; the rest were rolled out on a weekly basis and later made available to account holders on the PlayStation Website. Season 1 was released on DVD and Blu-ray in July; Season 2 be- gins production this month. Powers is the first digital series for Remi Aubuchon, who hails from broadcast and cable, notably TNT's Falling Skies. "It's not too much different procedurally from making TV," he reports. "But there are no standards and practices to speak of, no re- striction on the length of the show and no act breaks. So, in that sense, you're fairly free in terms of content."
