DEPARTMENT www.postmagazine.com 27 POST SEPTEMBER 2015 MTI Film recently purchased a 65-inch Samsung consumer monitor, a 55-inch LG OLED consumer display, and two Sony XBR-55X900A 55-inch Smart LED monitors for UHD viewing. "We don't grade on them, but when clients want to see how their work looks in UHD, we can set them up side by side in the front of our DI theater to give them an idea of the home viewing environment," says Stevens. MTI Film's Cortex up-res software is utilized to take SD and HD content to UHD resolutions. Stevens is convinced that OLED tech- nology is the future once professional displays are large enough and affordable enough to fill facilities. "Consumer-level OLED distribution is good; I'll be going to CES 2016 to check out the monitors." FUSEFX For Burbank's FuseFX (www.fusefx. com), which focuses on VFX for ep- isodic television, seeing the work on properly-calibrated monitors is critical, says co-founder and CTO Jason Fotter. "Maintaining the integrity and color of files throughout the VFX process has been something that FuseFX has focused on from the very beginning. A properly-calibrated monitor is an essen- tial part of this process." The company has Panasonic Viera TC-P65ZT60 65-inch plasma moni- tors in its screening rooms. "We really like them; their color fidelity is great. For VFX we need to review our shots in both their RAW formats and with different grades applied. These displays perform very well at both the low and high range," Fotter reports. The newest screening room acquisition is a 65-inch LG 65UB9800 4K LED display, which was purchased to meet a client's need for UHD viewing. "It was the second 4K display we tested. On the first monitor, the viewing angle in our screening room was horrible. When we checked every angle of the LG display, it was much better," says Fotter. Color calibration for the plasmas and the new 4K monitor is done about twice a year by David Abrams of Burbank's Avical, who uses a Photo Research spectroradiometer. "David really is the 'Monitor Whisperer,'" Fotter laughs. "We've worked with him in our Vancouver and New York offices, too. Calibration is a very detailed process, and I like professionals to do that so I know it's done right." Now that FuseFX has acquired its first 4K monitor, more are undoubtedly on the way. "UHD is in our future," says Fotter. "We are preparing all aspects of our workflow to be able to support UHD and beyond." FuseFX has Panasonic Viera plasmas in its screening rooms. They recently purchased their first 4K monitor. MTI Film checks it monitors weekly. The studio uses plasma displays but sees OLEDs as the future.
