Mahakian served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Between wars, he received a BA degree from USC and worked in radio, television and motion pictures as a post-production coordinator, film editor and sound editor. His career in the entertainment industry ranged from TV series such as The Odd Couple, The Brady Bunch and others to major films such as Rebel Without a Cause, The Manchurian Candidate, West Side Story and more. He was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Mahakian was awarded a Golden Reel Award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors and won two Emmy Awards: Outstanding Film Sound Editing for a Series for the pilot episode of Miami Vice (1984) and Outstanding (TV) Film Sound Editing for a Limited Series or a Special for The Day After (1983). He was also nominated for an Emmy for his work on The Winds of War (1983). Mahakian entered a Marine Corps boot camp the day after high school graduation. As a 17-year-old, he had to get his parents' permission — and signature — to join before he turned 18. He was stationed at Marine Corps bases in Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point, North Carolina, and received training as a radar technician — at a time when radar technology was in its infancy — and was assigned to Air Warning Squadron 8. In World War II, Mahakian fought in the Battle of Okinawa in the Pacific. After the war, he remained in the Marine Corps Reserve and, after graduating from the University of Southern California, became a Marine Corps lieutenant. After training at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, he was sent to Korea as an infantry officer, serving in the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines during the Korean War. When the Vietnam War commenced, Mahakian was assigned as special films project officer for the commander of the Marine Corps to make documentary films on the Marine activities in Vietnam. In retirement, he loved collecting books and stamps. He was also devoted to his loving wife Patricia and his daughter Susan.
