Learning is a messy, mistake-fi lled business. I think of the rook- ie teacher I once was or my cringe-worthy fi rst writing efforts. In my experience, it has been helpful to work with a mentor. The best have been empathetic but scrupulously honest about my work. Ideally, we develop an open, mutually benefi - cial relationship that lasts years. Lydie Raschka (Pg. 10) contributors As a certifi ed professional dog trainer, I've learned the different ways that animals learn in order to train dogs successfully. However, dog trainers don't really train dogs, we train dog owners, and the more people I've worked with, the more I've re- alized that we learn in many of the same ways as our pets. Understanding these universal rules of learning has helped me to appreciate how much a part of the animal kingdom humans truly are. Stephanie Gibeault (Pg. 42) Learning is the ultimate plea- sure—the alchemical process whereby curiosity turns to awe. Life has been extremely generous to me in this re- gard. I've been a musician, a writer, an artist, a bug exter- minator, a traveler, a student, an underachiever, a patient and a school bus driver. Each experi- ence has been priceless. I hope it all goes on forever. Anne Stockwell (Pg. 26) The process of falling in and out of love with a vocation can propel lifelong learning. In my case, I knew by sixth grade that writ- ing was my best subject and would play a role in defi ning me as a person. However, ev- erything from school rivalries to offi ce politics to profes- sional setbacks would make me question my career decision. That said, when I remember why I got into writing, I not only embrace it anew, but use those diffi cult lessons to become a better writer. Elyse Glickman (Pg. 24) Lifelong learning means just that—it continues for the duration of our time on earth. For this issue we asked some of our contributing writers to share some- thing on "What I know about lifelong learning." Their generous responses of- fer yet another opportunity for learning.
