Geeo SuMMer traVeL ProGraMS for eduCatorS Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a non-profit organiza- tion that runs summer professional develop- ment travel programs designed for teachers. GEEO is offering 16 different travel programs for the summer of 2012: India/Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand/Laos/Cambodia, China, Russia/ Mongolia/China, Egypt, Turkey 8 day, Turkey 15 day, South Africa/Mozambique/Zimbabwe/ Botswana, Morocco, Argentina/Uruguay/Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, The Galapagos Islands, and Costa Rica. Educators have the option to earn gradu- ate school credit (3 credits through Indiana University) and professional development credit while seeing the world. The trips are 8 to 24 days in length and are designed and discounted to be interesting and affordable for teachers. GEEO provides teachers educational materials and the structure to help them bring their expe- riences into the classroom. The trips are open to all nationalities of K-12 and university educators and administrators, as well as retired educators. Educators are also permitted to bring along a non-educator guest. NGA selects 25 outstanding applicants to receive Mantis tiller/cultivators. Applicants must operate a charitable or educational program that is not for profit in the United States. For more information, visit www.kidsgardening.org/grants/2012-man- tis-awards-community-and-youth-gardens. nCtM: PreK-8 Pre-SerViCe teaCHer aCtion reSearCH GrantS National Council of Teachers of Mathematics PreK-8 Pre-service Teacher Action Research Grants provide financial support for ac- tion research conducted as a collaborative by university faculty, pre-service teacher(s), and classroom teacher(s) seeking to improve their understanding of mathematics in PreK-8 classroom(s). Primary emphasis will be placed on collaboration by a team of researchers con- sisting of university, elementary/middle school teachers, and pre-service teachers from the un- dergraduate ranks. The action research should be designed, implemented, and completed with a focus on enhancing the teaching and/ or learning of mathematics in grades PreK-8. Proposals must address the following: rationale for the research project, the expected impact on teaching/learning in the school setting, and anticipated improvements in pre-service student learning. Grant funds should be used to sup- port project expenses to plan and carry out the action research. Current (as of April 27, 2012) full individual or e-members of NCTM or those teaching at a school with a current (as of April 27, 2012) NCTM PreK-8 school membership are eligible for this $3,000 grant. The participating pre- service teacher(s) must be in an initial licensure/ certification program at the undergraduate level and, at some point during the term of the grant, must be engaged in some form of practicum experience or student teaching.
