REAL EVENTS eventos reales 58 Linda Novia Magazine | www.lindanovia.net MY QUINCEAÑERA WAS A LAST MINUTE THING; we had only 6 months to plan everything. I was indecisive about whether or not I even wanted a party but when December came around, the stars were aligned and the wind was blowing in the right direction so I told my parents that I wanted a party after all. I am not the kind of person who likes to be in the spotlight but I wanted to celebrate my 15th birthday with all of my family. We found a nearby hall that was the perfect in size and historic style. We booked it for April 12, 2008 and arranged for the church ceremony at our neighborhood Catholic Church. My mom and I were surprised at the cost of the religious ceremony, but I guess even churches have bills, right? My theme was the first thing I decided on. I had many ideas in mind, but my two older sisters helped me out with the final decision. I definitely wanted my quinceañera and my dress to be unique like me; they had to be different from all the ones that I have ever seen. I chose a combination of brown and teal as my theme colors and decided that my quince theme should represent the 1950s. The dresses of that time were what captured my attention the and I knew that my dress would have to represent that era. My sister Dora designed my dress and had a small, local business make it. The style was white with a teal sash that went half way down my shin. The fabric was satin with lace overlay. My family was involved quite a bit in making my special day a reality. My sister did my makeup and I don't think I would have trusted anyone else to do my hair except my Aunt, who is a professional hairstylist. I was pleasantly surprised to see the centerpieces since my mom and aunt chose them. They were round and sat on high vases with teal and white daisies. Despite the traditional bouquet that the quinceañera has to carry around, I decided on something a bit more fun like a pomander, which is essentially a bouquet but shaped in a ball. It had a teal ribbon attached so I could carry it around. My mom made the church bouquet with white cala lilies from our garden to give it that personal touch. Our photographer was René Miranda who was very easy to work with and our videographer was Juventino Lopez from Producciones Prisma who had a classy and traditional style. We had family and friends help decorate the hall. We had chicken and beef fajitas with rice and beans and salad as the main course. My dad's mariachi band and DJ Pedro Silva provided the music and entertainment. And my dear sister Silvia choreographed my surprise dance. My quinceañera was like a big family reunion. I knew everyone that came and it was nice to see some faces that I hadn't seen in a long time. Everyone had a great time dancing, eating, drinking and catching up. My sister made a slideshow and my family got to see themselves grow up with me. I realized that planning my quinceañera was very time consuming but not that complicated. Tomé conciencia de que planear mi quinceañera se llevó There Once was a Little GIRL...
