www.postmagazine.com 35 POST JUNE 2015 Although Technicolor's Eizo monitors have been dedicated to Autodesk applica- tions and QC, a mix of displays of different types and manufacturer is often the best post solution. Monitors are chosen for their features, capabilities and performance, then engineered to work together in an edit bay, color room or DI suite. For example, the color timing room where the Amazon dramatic comedy Mozart in the Jungle is posted features a Panasonic Series 11 plasma monitor SDR, Sony BVM-X300 OLED HDR reference monitor and 65-inch Samsung JS9500 PQ HDR monitor. "All have different color spaces and ranges, and it's a challenge to make them all match," Johanson says. BRAIN FARM A full-service entertainment and produc- tion company with roots in action sports, Jackson, WY's Brain Farm (www.brain- farmcinema.com) has four edit bays to support its film projects and commercial work, plus a newly upgraded 4K theater. Brain Farm selected HP DreamColor Z27x 27-inch displays for day-to-day monitoring in its four edit suites. They replaced a mix of other displays being used throughout the studio. "Now we're consistent across all the bays," says post production supervisor Danny Holland. "Like many people, we're moving into the 4K world; our next three films will all be delivered in 4K. We've shot these films primarily with Red Epics and Dragons, as well as a Phantom Flex 4K. For post, we have kept an offline HD to online 4K workflow due to the intense data requirements of working natively with hundreds of terabytes of media per film. The 227x is a gorgeous monitor for our main editorial work. We have also been testing a few DreamColor 227s, which are 4K, for when we need to see things quickly in full resolution." Holland cites the high level of bright- ness, clarity, contrast and sharpness of the Z27x. The color-accurate displays are set to Rec 709 color space for consisten- cy throughout the post facility. "There are great calibration tools built into the displays; they make it easy to re- calibrate or sync calibrations across our system with relative ease," says Holland. "The monitors have tons of inputs, and they're easy to travel with and set up on-location." The Z27x's price point also has appeal. "HP delivers a lot of features for a frac- tion of the cost of other manufacturers," he says. "Prices are moving in the right direction. Five years ago, try finding a color-accurate monitor at HP's price that you could feel confident in?" Holland likes HP's responsiveness, too. "One of the things we enjoy most is how they listen to customers and build prod- ucts based on their feedback," he says. "We really enjoy our Z27x displays and are excited about what's coming down Brainfarm employs HP DreamColor Z27x displays.
