I got interested in reporting about chronic pain after fi nding out how many thousands of people suffer from it just in the U.S. alone. As I started to dig deeper into the research, I found that people suffering from chronic pain have a high incidence of opioid abuse and suicide. I think it is important that people learn about alternative methods of chronic pain management that has research to back it up, so they can lower their dependence on opioids and lead functioning lives. Levi Sharpe (Pg. 24) contributors When I was a kid I had to wear leg braces, like Forrest Gump, and my dad strapped my feet to a physician-pre- scribed bar when he put me in my crib at night. Today, my legs, feet and hips are pain-free, thanks to yoga. My toes still point in when I'm tired, but I've completed two marathons, four half marathons and an Olympic Triathlon. As I tell my yoga students, the asana is the elixir. Kaci Yoh (Pg. 18) When I feel myself veering emotionally and spiritually off track, pausing for an everyday healing often restores me to happy equilibrium. These little healings take many forms—napping on a bench by a lake, doing yoga on the grass, meditating, praying, going to Catholic mass, talking with an old and trusted friend. I think the key is to stop and acknowledge that I need healing, instead of plowing on with my day and journeying further into discontent. Teresa Bergen (Pg. 28) What I know is that the inner voice does not rest until it's heard. It took me years of pre- tending and multiple episodes of acute abdominal pain, a few trips to the ER, and a week of quiet in a desert retreat in Mexico to hear the truth of my heart. I fi rst heard it one cool morning on a labyrinth at age 38. When I fi nally heeded its advice, my life changed. I have been feeling the joy of being aligned with my purpose ever since. Bahar Anooshahr (Pg. 42) For our Healing Arts issue, we asked our contributors to write something on "What I know about healing." We're touched by their willingness to be vulnerable, and love the different ways they responded. We hope you enjoy getting to know them a little better.
