FEB 3 CTA Scholarships SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE Applications for the 2012 CTA Scholarship program must be postmarked by Friday, Feb. 3. The program offers up to 34 $5,000 scholarships for dependent children of CTA members, including the Ralph J. Flynn Memorial Scholarship for the highest-scor- ing applicant; the Del A. Weber Scholarship, one $5,000 scholarship for a dependent child of a CTA member attending continuation high school or an alternative educa- tion program; up to five $3,000 scholarships for CTA members, including members working on an emergency credential; and the L. Gordon Bittle Memorial Scholarship, providing up to three $3,000 scholarships for Student CTA members. www.cta.org/About-CTA/CTA-Foundation/Scholarships FEB 3–5 CONFERENCE Good Teaching Conference North Marriott, San Jose Convention Center The CTA Good Teaching Conference is designed to support excellent teaching and learning practices for classroom teachers. Offering a variety of workshops in curriculum content areas for K-12 teachers, the conference provides opportunities for professional development and offers time to network and share ideas with colleagues and experts in the field. More than 80 workshops are scheduled, including sessions on innovative educational best practices, technology, classroom management, and much more. Special all-day pre-conference sessions on retirement planning, Common Core State Standards, National Board Certification, and teacher evaluation are offered on Friday. Rob Black, the popular host of television's "Rob Black and Your Money," will present a bonus session Saturday morning on finan- cial issues for educators. www.cta.org/conferences FEB 24 Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE CTA and Student CTA established the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund to aid members of ethnic minorities in preparing for teaching-related careers in public education. The fund is supported by voluntary contributions from CTA mem- bers and the CTA Foundation for Teaching and Learning. An applicant must be a member of a defined ethnic minority group and an active member of CTA or Stu- dent CTA, or a dependent child of a CTA member. Read Across America is an annual, nationwide celebration of reading, and this year CTA is dishing up not one but two featured books to tempt your reading tastes.
