House Resolution honors unions' role in building middle class - by Mike Hall, Nov 4, 2011, http://blog.aflcionow.org The nation's labor unions play a vital role in "ensuring a strong middle class," says a resolution honoring the labor movement, intro- duced in the U.S. House this week by Rep. Donald Payne (D-N.J.). H ouse Resolution 452 ( ) recog- nizes the importance of unions in building and maintaining a middle class: "by advocating for more equi- table wages, humane work condi- tions, improved benefits…[and] unions make the middle class strong by ensuring workers have a voice in both the market and in the nation's democracy." Payne, who held several union- ized jobs before being elected to Congress in 1988, says: "I know firsthand the strong impact unions have made on the workforce. I worked my way through college as a dockworker at Port Newark. I was once a seasonal postal worker and 4 Nov/Dec 2011 DSEA ACTION! truck driver. I have worked the line and was a forklift operator at a local brewery in Newark, New Jersey. "I also served as a teacher for Newark Public Schools. If it were not for the protections provided by a union in these positions, I may not have succeeded in those posi- tions, which ultimately prepared me to represent labor union inter- ests now as a senior member on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce." The resolution notes that if the rate of unionization increased by 10 percent, "the typical middle class family would earn $1,479 more this year," and also says: "Unions bene- www.dsea.org fit even nonunion workers—partic- ularly in highly unionized indus- tries—by setting a high standard for benefits and wages that other employers must meet." It also highlights the role unions have played in bringing economic equality to women and communi- ties of color, the training opportuni- ties unions provide and their essen- tial contributions in winning vital legislation from Social Security to the minimum wage to health care reform. pdf/BILLS-112hres452ih.pdf http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys /pkg/BILLS-112hres452ih/
