Additional clean-up was completed at MTI Film. Once the restored film was given the client's seal of approval, Cinetech recorded the files using their Arri- laser film recorders to a new preservation color inter- negative from which the film festival's print was struck. Cinetech also restored 1970's Jack Nicholson vehi- cle, Five Easy Pieces, which had previously seen some photochemical work and a small amount of digital restoration. "With all the changes in technology over the last five years or so, it is easier and more cost effi- cient now for an entire digital restoration," Olivier says. Since the film had only slight dye fading, no color matrix needed to be applied; its tears, scratches and dirt were consistent with its age. Cinetech's roster of tools, including Pixel Farm's PF Clean and MTI's Cor- rect, were enlisted for the project. "It's clear that there is no one app or system that can do everything best, so you need to have different tools in your toolbox to deal with all the issues that come up," he observes. The 1965 film stars Frank Sinatra and tells the stor y of Col. Joseph Ryan, an American P.O.W., who leads a group of mostly British soldiers through a dan- gerous escape by hijacking a German train in Italy. "The film was extremely damaged with every con- ceivable film defect imaginable, including scratches lasting for entire reels. This was a huge undertaking as Warner's MPI helped make Cary Grant look even better while restoring the Hitchcock classic North By Northwest for its 50th anniversary. The scan was via a Northlight; color was done with Baselight.
