RITTWAGE President / CEO CONTENDERS & TRENDS NEW YORK, NEW YORK he Oscar nominees were scheduled to be announced just after our print deadline, but that didn't stop us from spec- ulating on which 2014 films might receive recognition from the Academy on February 22nd. This month, Iain Blair looks at many of the films that are contending for top honors in the Directing, Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Visual Effects catego- ries. Turn to page 16 for complete details. I also had a chance to sit down with Os- car-winning director Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September), who recently completed work on his latest feature, Black Sea, which opens in theatres on January 23rd. The film stars Jude Law as a marine salvage expert who assembles a multi-cultural crew to go after Hitler's missing gold, lost on a sunken U-boat during World War II. Macdonald details the challenges of shooting in tight quarters — in this case a vintage Russian submarine — as well as how he balanced the use of visual effects and practical tech- niques. See page 4 for details. And for the past several weeks, Post has been catching up with professionals throughout the industry to learn their pre- dictions for the year ahead. Alan Nay, who is a co-founder of Seattle studio World Fa- mous, says the trend he's seeing is toward the creation of more content, more often, and for less money. "We recently collaborated with a media company on a very cool animated Web series designed for a specific product cat- egory," he recalls. "Was it a commercial or original content? Yes!" Larry Chernoff, CEO of MTI Film in Hol- lywood, says the industry should look to IP broadcasters when it comes to predicting the year ahead, as only they can deliver Ultra HD content at this point in time. A number of pros also weighed in on what technology trends they think will have the most influence on workflows in the upcoming year. I highly recommend visiting the Post Website for commentary on many of the issues that are influencing the indus- try, as well as for bonus content that you won't find here in print. Enjoy the issue! hile there's always much ado about big productions and projects coming out of West Coast studios, as well as the ever-expanding VFX community in Vancou- ver, there's been plenty of activity here on the East Coast as well. New York City studios were simply buzzing last year with high-end film, ad campaigns and TV projects. As usual, Post was there for some of the action. A personal thrill was an early December visit to the set of NBC's The Blacklist, shot at locations throughout New York City. There, I had a chance to meet with DP Eric Moyni- er, Panavision's Chris Konash and some of the production team to get a close-up look at the set, including the show's famous war room, during a shoot for an upcoming post Super Bowl episode. I saw the Sony F55 4K cameras in action — outfitted with Panavision lenses — right at the start of the production's 4K workflow. Moynier discussed the show's tight turnaround where "episodes may air sometimes just 72 hours later," as well as the camera's versatility and outstanding dynamic range. Later we spoke with DP Mike Caracci- olo and editor Christopher Brookshire on how the 4K workflow continues into post (read more in "Primetime" on page 12). Also on-set was Greg Anderson, creative director and senior VFX supervisor at New York's FuseFX, a studio we visited just a day later. With roots in LA, FuseFX opened its New York doors in August 2014. Anderson, who is charged with growing the New York business, oversees all of the VFX on The Blacklist, which entails a great deal of matte paintings and compositing. Relying on such tools as 3DS Max and Nuke, Anderson says that about 90 percent of his studio's work comes from television, including ABC's Mar- vel's Agents of SHIELD and FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show (last month's "Primetime" column). Post also stopped by editorial house Northern Lights, where partner David Gioiella took us on a tour through the facility, includ- ing sister companies SuperExploder, Bodega and Mr. Wonderful. See our "Open House" online at www.postmagazine.com. Ending off the year, I had a chance to speak at length with Encore New York about the extensive and remarkable work they did on the new Netflix series, Marco Polo, which you can read about on page 6 in this issue. Here's looking forward to many more exciting projects in the year ahead! Post Magazine is published by Post, LLC, a COP communications company.
