can serve as a second or third monitor for any laptop. It features a full-HD resolution (1920x1200) WUXGA+ display, making it one of the highest resolution portable laptop monitors available. Its rugged alumi- num alloy housing is designed to withstand continuous use on the road, and a leather handle makes it easy to transport. The height and tilt angle can be adjusted. The ViewPort ships as either a single monitor with a handle included or as a pair for users who need a total of three displays, includ- ing that of their laptop. Most laptops allow for two additional displays with no need for additional hardware. For those limited to a single secondary display, NextComputing bundles Matrox's DualHead2Go external multi-monitor adapter. Pricing starts at $1490 for a single monitor kit with a travel bag. NextComputing; www.nextcomputing.com SOFTWARE GAME DEVELOPMENT Crytek SDK Independent game development studio Crytek has released a free, all-in-one game software developer kit. The CryEngine 3 is designed for non-commercial use and provides a complete game engine to create next-generation games for PCs. The SDK includes the CryEngine 3 Sandbox level editor, a third-generation "what you see is what you play" (WYSIWYP) tool designed for professional developers. Pros can download the free tool set at crydev. net, and the SDK will be updated regularly to give the community access to all recent advancements. The company is offering a royalty-only license model for games made with the SDK (20 percent of the developer's revenues from the commercial launch of a game). Crytek; www.crydev.net WIN VISUALIZATION Real-time Viz E-on Software, which offers tools for creat- ing 3D sky, light, and nature animation, has released LumenRT Review for SketchUp, a new real-time 3D product for visualizing architectural projects. The new release adds support for SketchUp "Face Me" billboards, together with the ability to add the user's company logo on LiveCubes. Since billboard objects almost always face the camera, complex images can now be defined with far fewer polygons while maintaining a 3D look and feel. This can be useful when creating plants, bushes, and grass fields, or when adding people in the scene. LumenRT Review for SketchUp and SketchUp Pro have an introductory price of $195 (down from $295). E-on Software; www.e-onsoftware.com WIN STEREOSCOPIC 3D On-set Calibration Dashwood Cinema Solutions has released Stereo3D CAT, its stereoscopic 3D camera calibration and monitoring solution. Stereo3D CAT provides tools for analyz- ing stereo 3D images on set, helping to eliminate guesswork in aligning 3D beam- splitter rigs. The tool allows users to accu- rately align the geometry and colorimetry of stereoscopic setups, as well as calculate proper interaxial separation. The Stereo3D Visualizer can calculate dimensions of a scene, render a visual representation of the objects in the scene, and warn against settings that may cause viewer discomfort. The Parallax Inspector confirms that posi- MAC tive parallax is within specified limits and will not cause divergence of the eyes. A number of stereoscopic scopes are included with the solution, and preview modes allow for viewing in anaglyph, difference, split, side-by-side, line-by-line, and top/bottom. In addition, alignment data can be transmitted to an iPad. Dashwood Cinema Solutions; www.dashwood3d.com MAC PHOTO EDITING Paint Like a Pro Corel has released PaintShop Pro X4, which includes more than 75 new and enhanced features. The photo-editing software has been improved on four fronts: power, performance, usability, and sharing. The new HDR module provides tools to merge photos and create exposures with stunning contrast. It also offers users the option of processing large batches of HDR exposure brackets quickly. A Photo Blend tool lets users select people, objects, or areas from a series of images. The Fill Light tool lets pros work quickly to bring out underexposed areas without affecting the overall brightness of an image, while the Clarity tool makes it easy to enhance subtle yet important details. The new release offers as much as 50 percent performance gains on effects such as vibrancy, noise removal, and depth of field. Built-in social media tools allow users to quickly share images on Face- book and Flickr. The tool costs $799, with upgrades and education and commer- cial licenses available. A $99 "Ultimate" version provides pro tools, such as Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters, royalty-free images from Fotolia, and a custom photo book from Blurb.
