SAGAFTRA.org | Special Issue 2015 | SAG-AFTRA 56 D ebbie Reynolds epitomizes a Life Achievement honoree: A multitalented performer who has found success onscreen, on the stage and in the recording studio, who in her spare time devotes herself to philanthropic endeavors and also happens to be an American icon. Over her more than 65-year performing career, the roles Reynolds has played — from spunky Kathy Selden in Singin' in the Rain to that unsinkable Molly Brown — are beloved and in a class of their own. With more than 50 motion pictures, two Broadway shows, two television series and dozens of television, cabaret and concert appearances, the 82-year-old Reynolds really has done it all. At the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® on Jan. 25, her accomplishments will be recognized with the presentation of the 51st SAG Life Achievement Award. Born Mary Frances Reynolds in El Paso, Texas, Reynolds and her family moved to Burbank in 1939. Upon being named Miss Burbank at age 16, she drew the attention of studio talent scouts, and was soon signed to Warner Bros. as Debbie Reynolds. Her screen debut came in the 1950 musical The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady. Her breakout role was in one of the great musicals, Singin' in the Rain, starring opposite Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor. Over the next 10 years, Reynolds made more than 25 films, including The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which garnered her an Academy Award nomination; How the West Was Won; and Tammy and the Bachelor, which included the Oscar-nominated ARCHIVE PHOTOS/GET T Y IMAGES ALBERTO E.
