G lasgow-based Scotch merchants Whyte & Mackay recently announced an enhanced marketing effort for their flagship single malt, The Dalmore, with the U.S. being its prime target. I hadn't tasted these Highland whiskies for several years and, regret- tably, was not on that particular judging panel when they won a bevy of Gold and Double Gold awards at this year's San Francisco World Spirits Competition. But a few weeks ago I spent a long, rewarding evening getting up close and personal with the six current releases. To say I was im- pressed would be an understatement. The brand's motto, "I Shine," couldn't be truer, and the glow gets warmer, brighter and more as- sured (as did my mood) the further one delves into the range. These are exquisite and beautifully modulated expressions of single malt Scotch in all its glory. 90 12 Year Old ($45) Smooth and toasty with notes of sherry cask and vanilla; long, mellow and balanced with a complex, lightly spiced finish with a hint of peat. 91 Gran Reserva ($65) Smooth and toasted with pronounced sherry notes and sweet dried fruit; malty, smoky and made to accompany chocolate or fine cigars. 92 15 Year Old ($80) Lush, dense and robust with creamy, toasted sherry and grilled meat; lusty, rich and yet elegant with length, depth and complexity. 94 1263 King Alexander III ($225) Dark, lush and complex with vanilla, caramel and spice, crème brûlée and grilled bacon; cinnamon, nutmeg and with a finish that just goes on and on, evolving as it goes. 97 1974 ($1500) OMG: roasted bacon and creamy sherry with a hint of rancio, caramel and orange; elegant, rich and astonishing with Christmas spices and long, expansive finish. 99 40 Year Old ($3000) One of the most enticing noses I've ever encoun- tered; sensuous, rich and toasted with caramel, treacle, brown sugar and grilled meat; smooth with light smoke, mature fruit, soft vanilla oak, incredible depth and a finish that lasts forever. The Dalmore has a long-standing reputation for aging better than most Highland malts: this one may be all the proof needed. The Dalmore is imported by Whyte & Mackay through Shaw-Ross Importers. All Aglow The Dalmore shines on
