art & soul BOOKS Burning Man Art on Fire By Christine Hassler W hy do so many unsatisfi ed people camp on the sofa watching life pass them by? In Expectation Hang- over, Christine Hassler shows us how to turn an ex- pectation hangover into an unexpected opportunity to grow. What is an expectation hangover? Everything we're left with when the rug has been pulled out from under us: when things don't go our way, or they do and we remain unfulfi lled. The writing is thoughtfully organized and thorough, giv- ing us a treatment plan that works on the emotional, mental, behavioral and spiritual levels. Hassler discusses the relation- ship between our "goal line," our material aspirations; and our "soul line," our soul evolution, reminding us that, "because our expectation hangovers hit us hardest on the goal line, we fi nd our way to the soul line almost by default." She beautifully illus- trates how disappointments are an opportunity to begin living inside out instead of outside in. The exercises Hassler includes are accessible and illu- minating; applying the discipline that this workbook offers may be the next best thing to a good ther- apist. She is, in fact, credentialed with a Masters Degree in Spiritual Psychology, and succeeds in taking the discussion out of the theoretical and making it practical. However, to get full value from it requires self-motivation and follow-through. (New World Library) —Erica Lynn By Jennifer Raiser I f you've never been to Burning Man, the annual weeklong festival in the Black Rock Desert, the art in this breathtaking new compendium will make you want to go. And if you're already a Burner? You will absolutely love this collection of photographs of some of the most amazing art creations of the last decade. Jennifer Raiser's book is short on text and long on memorable photography by Sidney Erthal and Scott Landon, but the true artistry is in the ingenious creations that were brought to the Playa. From a temple constructed from scrap wood to a Trojan horse carrying sensual delights, from a fi eld of solar-propelled sunfl owers to a 15-foot-high model of a human head designed by physicians, scientists and technicians that mimicked clinical brain scans in real time, these and so many more are works of astonishing imagination and talent. Many were burned at the end of the festival, so if you were there you'll appreciate the memories. But if you missed them then, this book may be your only chance to experience them ever. Don't make the same mistake twice. (Race Point Publishing) —Abigail Lewis Expectation Hangover Overcoming Disappointment in Work, Love and Life 30 wholelifetimesmagazine.com
